2006 WORLD CUP IN GERMANY | ENGLAND vs PARAGUAY

ENGLAND WIN UNCONVINCINGLY 1-0 WITH PARAGUAY

Saturday June 10, 2006 | 1st Round
Paraguay scored the only goal in this match, but they lost because it was an own goal.

In the 3rd minute, England's David Beckham sent a wonderful free kick into the Paraguayan penalty area which was headed by Carlos Gamarra past his own keeper Justo Villar and into goal.

Villar injured himself without player contact three minutes later on a sliding clearance and was replaced by Aldo Bobadilla.

Bobadilla got off to a shaky start when five minutes after entering, he was whistled for time wasting.

That resulted in a golden opportunity for England with a free kick inside the edge of the penalty box.

A wasted effort by Frank Lampard slammed the shot into the Paraguayan wall.

Bobadilla later gained form with some fine saves.

Paraguay had several chances to knot this one up.

During injury time before the interval, Nelson Valdes narrowly missed left of goal in a furious goal mouth action sequence.

Then in the 60th minute, a poor clearance by England keeper Paul Robinson found Carlos Paredes with the ball from very close range, but he sent it above the cross bar.

Beckham provided many fine setups on the day and was the man of the match.
