World Cup 2006

2006 WORLD CUP IN GERMANY | NETHERLANDS vs ARGENTINA

NETHERLANDS, ARGENTINA SCORELESS

Wednesday June 21, 2006 | 1st Round
Both teams came into the match knowing they were going into the 2nd Round, and they showed it.

It was an uneventful match with the two teams resting numerous starters.

The only reward for winning this group was facing Mexico instead of Portugal in the next round - not much of a motivator for either team.

An interesting corner kick by Argentina in the 27th minute by Juan Riquelme, who almost put it into goal directly with an inswinging banana looper.

Keeper Edwin van der Sar, who seemed a bit phased by the quality kick, saved the day by punching it over the bar.

Moments later and almost an own goal by Netherlands.

Dutchman Khalid Boulahrouz cleared a Riquelme free kick and hit his post in the process.
