2006 WORLD CUP IN GERMANY | PORTUGAL vs ANGOLA

PORTUGAL 1-0 OVER ANGOLA

Sunday June 11, 2006 | 1st Round
It was one way traffic in this one with Portugal controlling.

Angola got off to a horrific start.

The first 10 seconds were a sign of things to come when Portugal's Pauleta made a great opening run and missed a goal only by inches.

Three minutes later, the Portuguese found the back of the net when Luis Figo nicely set up Pauleta for the winner.

The Angolans finally shook off their nerves and came to life after 20 minutes or so with a couple nice shots on goal, including an over the head scissors kick attempt by Akwa.

In the 32nd minute, a Figo cross across the face of the Angolan goal just missed Pauleto at the near post and surprised Cristiano Ronaldo at the far post, who made nothing of the chance.

Minute 35 saw Ronaldo bang the crossbar on a headed attempt via a Figo corner kick.

Just before the interval, Angola fired a nice shot that required a diving save by keeper Ricardo, who just got a hand to it to clear for a corner.

Portugal followed moments later with a strong shot by Ronaldo, which also forced a nice diving save by keeper.

In the 58th minute, Portugal's Pauleto had two shots at goal.

The first was a swift turnaround just wide of the post.

Then a few seconds later, his strike was saved by a diving Joao Ricardo in goal.

Only a couple minutes passed and Portugal again fired away on goal after some nice passing, but it was snuffed by the Portuguese keeper.

Even with Portugal firing shots non-stop at their opponents, Angola came very close to equalizing in the 89th minute on a Mateus flick.

A minute later Portugal were back to their old tricks with a long range bullet from Maniche, pushed over the bar nicely by Joao Ricardo.

It ended with only the one early goal by the Portuguese, but Angola played hard and can be proud of their World Cup debut match against their former colonial rulers.
