2006 WORLD CUP IN GERMANY | PORTUGAL vs MEXICO

PORTUGAL 2, MEXICO 1

Wednesday June 21, 2006 | 1st Round
Portugal rested five players with yellows from the first two matches, but it wasn't even noticeable as they opened scoring in the 6th minute, then added to their lead in the 23rd minute.

The second goal came via penalty kick courtesy of a Mexican handball in the area following a corner.

Mexico pulled one back six minutes later with a header home off a corner.

The Mexicans had a great chance for an equalizer in the 57th minute when they were similarly awarded a penalty of their own for a Portuguese handball in the area.

But Mexico's Omar Bravo sent the penalty over the bar.

Mexico was shown red four minutes later for a Luis Perez simulation in the penalty area.

It was his second yellow card of the match.

The match slowed down considerably after the red card as Portugal went defensive and Mexico dominated the offense.

The Mexicans may have deserved another penalty in the 73rd minute for what appeared to be a foul in the area.
